Crime and Criminals Tracking Network and Systems Get Extension by One Year

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has approved the extension of implementation phase of Crime and Criminals Tracking Network and Systems (CCTNS) Project for another year which will go beyond 31 March 2017. The proposal was forwarded by Union Ministry of Home Affairs. It is said that, one year extension will help in achieving remaining objectives of project comprehensively.

The Crime and Criminals Tracking Network and Systems (CCTNS) aims at connecting all police stations which can contact each or any other police station without any hindrance or delay. Interlinking of police stations will facilitate collection, storage, retrieval, analysis and transfer information among police stations, State headquarters and central police organizations. It is learnt that approximately 14,000 police stations throughout the country will be automated along with 6000 higher offices in police hierarchy.

CCTNS is a mission mode project under the National e-Governance Plan of Central Government that, aims at creating a comprehensive and integrated system for enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of policing by adopting of principle of e-Governance and it further seeks to create nationwide networking infrastructure for evolution of IT-enabled-state-of-the-art tracking system for investigation of crime and detection of criminals. It was originally sanctioned in year 2009. Infact, in year 2015 another feature was added in which Inter-operable Criminal Justice System (ICJS) also aims to integrate CCTNS project with e-courts and e-prisons databases and with other pillars of criminal justice system.

Once fully operational, the CCTNS will have a great impact upon criminal justice system of India. Among few larger impacts would be ranging from generating crime and criminal reports at State and Central level to inform policy interventions, providing pan-India search on complete national crime and criminal database and making it accessible to Investigating Officers throughout Country, providing various web based police related services to citizens and computerise police processes, Quick pan-India search of crime and criminal records of individuals through a national database.

The CCTNS will further facilitate transparency and speed in police service delivery, online registration of complaints and crime reporting. It will also improve inter-state tracking of criminal movement by facilitating search option to police in regional languages, providing reliable network connectivity to all Police Stations in Country. It also aims at expediting various kinds of police verification requests and investigation by integrating project various e-Governance projects such as Aadhaar, National Population Register, Vaahan Project etc. Further, it will enhance hi-tech investigation capability by incorporating advanced features such as biometric based identification, trend and pattern analytics etc.

The CCTNS is a pilot project and once started, it will lead to seamless working of law enforcement agencies which will further result in time bound investigations and other works.
