CWC and Labour Department more in breach than compliance of child welfare guidelines
In a case emerging out a lack of action taken by the police against a person employing children in a welding shop, the Court made a “shocking revelation” of the “poor functioning of the Child Welfare Committee”. It noted the Chairman of CWC’s lack of awareness of standard procedures and training in dealing with cases of children being forced to work to help earn a living; the Labour Department, knowing of the existence of eight such cases, was unable to provide updates as to any action taken. The Court’s order called for training and orientation of Chairpersons of CWCs and stakeholders, and directed the government to release schemes to prevent children being put to work by guardians and parents to provide economic help.
