Government ban on crude palm oil imports through Kerala ports in public interest

The Supreme Court held that there existed “sufficient public good” in banning the import of crude palm oil through ports in Kerala. The government had instituted the ban to protect indigenous producers of coconut oil from crude palm oil imports, which were nearly 50 per cent cheaper. The Appellants, manufacturers and refiners of edible oils, claimed that due to the ban on imports their transportation costs had increased, owing to the need to bring oil from other states. The Court added that as there existed a rational nexus between the policy of the government and the objective it sought to achieve, the ban was in the public interest and not arbitrary or irrational.
