Draft Telecom Consumers Protection (Tenth Amendment) Regulations, 2016

MANU/TRAI/0068/2016

The Telecom Regulatory Authority released draft Telecom Consumers Protection (Tenth Amendment) Regulations, 2016 to improve mobile internet penetration in the country.

TRAI acknowledges that the numbers of internet subscribers has increased at a much slower rate than those taking up mobile telephony. It attributes the same to several factors, including a lack of awareness of the benefits of the internet and illiteracy, and recommends longer validity in respect of Special Tariff Vouchers providing data only.

To that end, TRAI recommends such tariffs, aimed at mobilising internet for the marginal, first-time data users and price-sensitive consumers, be valid for one year.
