HRD Ministry encourages greater out-of-class engagement in higher education

Whereas the prescribed overall and direct teaching-learning workload for Assistant and Associate Professors remained the same, the Ministry of Human Resource Development called for “reinforcing of a student-centric and caring approach”.

The Ministry “encouraged” teachers to work with students beyond classroom teaching, indicating additional efforts in mentoring, guiding and counselling.

No explicit metric has been set for additional involvement of teaching staff, and the same cannot be included in API scores. However, the 6 hours per work, to be utilised for research, can now be spent on remedial classes, seminars, updating of course contents and other activities.
