Bombay HC: Harness Whatsapp to receive child rights complaints

Hearing a PIL for women lawyers being given priority appointments as Special Public Prosecutors under the Protection of Child Rights Act, the Bombay High Court segued instead to the glacial progress towards constitution of State Commission under the Act.

As for women being given priority, the court ordered State authorities to ensure that only member of the Bar capable of discharging duties effectively be appointed as special public prosecutors.

The court also opined giving wide publicity to the intention and workings of child protection envisaged under the Act, and called for a grievance redressal mechanism to entertain complaints against violation of children’s rights. It suggested that aside from receiving complaints traditionally, written and on toll free numbers, provision also be made to receive complaints from internet messaging tools.
