Government proposes harder fight against bonded labour

The central government announced proposals to make the Rehabilitation of Bonded Labour Scheme more effective. The scheme now envisages an increase in financial assistance to Rs. 1 lakh, from an earlier Rs. 20,000. Higher amounts will be made available for the most marginalised of groups.

The government also plans amendment to the Bonded Labout System Abolition Rules 1976, with the aim that trial and judgment in bonded labour cases be completed in one day.
