TRAI rules out inflation linked rate hike for TV services

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India declined an inflation linked hike for television tariffs. The Authority noted that healthy growth in the industry and a growing subscriber base had led to higher than expected revenues for television broadcasters.

TRAI’s inflation linked rate hike for TV services was proposed in 2014 and was calculated on the basis of the Wholesale Price Index. The approach was mired in controversy almost immediately, with TRAI being asked to reassess the need for inflation linked rate hikes in light not only of higher-than-expected revenues, but also qua consideration of other inflation indices.
