Bar Councils and Associations duty bound to provide information
Information pertaining to ethical standards of advocates with Bar Councils and Bar Associations cannot be denied upon requests for information as the bodies are statutory bodies. The Commission had heard an appeal pursuant to a request for information about the number of complaints against advocates and how many had been disposed of in the last 10 years. Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana provided no information regarding the same, nor had various Bar Associations. The Commission added that though Bar Associations were distinct from Bar Councils, they too were constituted under law, the Advocates Act 1961, and therefore had a duty to inform people about their activities.
