TRAI responds to DoT reference for improving telecom on islands

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India issued a response to the Department of Telecom reference for improving telecommunications services in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep. It recommended laying undersea cables in the longer run, however owing to cost constraints, satellite bandwidth would provide a solution in the short term. TRAI also called for utilising the Universal Services Obligation Fund for augmenting and developing telecom infrastructure on the islands, as the same did not present a viable commercial proposition for telecom providers.
