CCI approves Marriott’s acquisition of Starwood

The Competition Commission of India approved Marriott’s acquisition of Starwood Hotels and Resorts, both operators of vast multi-national chains of hotels. The Commission considered that in the relevant market of four- and five-star hotels across India, no appreciable adverse effect on competition would be felt, accepting the presence of established players in the upscale hotel business. However, it also included new hotel aggregators, ‘ZO’ and ‘OYO rooms’ and online travel portals as providing a countervailing bargaining power in the relevant market.
