The Rights of Transgender Persons Bill, 2015

Approved by the Rajya Sabha earlier in the year, The Rights of Transgender Persons Bill, 2015 has been opened up to public comment by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment. The Bill calls for recognition of transgender persons as a third gender, with freedom for individuals to be identified as male, female or transgender. Besides provisions specifically protecting transgender persons from discrimination, abuse or violence, the Bill proposes reservation under the existing OBC category for transgender persons and greater financial and medical aid.
