Draft Rules setting higher vehicular pollution standards

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways notified draft Rules to amend pollution standards in the Central Motor Vehicle Rules, 1989. The amendment proposes introducing Bharat Stage V and VI for four-wheelers manufactured after April, 2019. Separate notifications have been issued for vehicles weighing less than 3,500 kg, and those exceeding the weight threshold. Bharat Stage, or ‘BS’, norms prescribe limits on pollutants that a vehicle may emit during normal operation. Such limits prescribe not only permissible limits on noxious gases such methane hydrocarbon, nitrogen oxide and carbon monoxide, but may also effect change in testing methodologies. At present, four-wheeled vehicle manufactured after April, 2010 are required to conform to Bharat Stage IV, whereas two- and three-wheelers must comply with Bharat Stage III.
