Compensation for officer persecuted by Uttar Pradesh government

The Supreme Court awarded a former officer in the Indian Forest Service Rs. 10 lakhs for allegedly being falsely implicated by the incumbent government. The official in question had alleged persecution since 1997 by the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh for failing to comply with his directions, which led to an inquiry and subsequent arrest. The court, mindful that no material had been placed indicating involvement of the Chief Minister, nonetheless opined, “necessity is to fill in the existing gap by protecting the honest officers while making the corrupt officers realize that they are not above law”.
