Whips Conference supports independent body to recommend salary and allowances of MPs

Government’s proposal to set up an independent Emoluments Commission to determine salaries and allowances for Members of Parliament was widely supported at the All India Whips Conference. Also urged at the Conference was for States to ensure uniformity in salaries for legislators across the country, though with variances in allowances depending on the situation in the state. The Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs had proposed a three member, independent Emoluments Commission to recommend salaries and other allowances for the Members of Parliament. It suggested principles for Ministerial salaries to adequately reflect responsibility, provide sufficient reward to make Parliament full-time career and be of a level that did not deter candidates, nor lure them with money.
