Rajya Sabha has passed the International Financial Services Centres Authority Bill, 2019 by a voice vote thereby paving the way for setting up a unified regulator for the International Financial Services Centres.

President Gives Assent to Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019 - 13.12.2019
President has given assent to the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019 and it has now become an Act. According to the Act, members of Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi and Christian communities who have come from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan till December 31, 2014 and facing religious persecution there will not be treated as illegal immigrants but given Indian citizenship.

Calcutta High Court Refuses Stay on Mukul Voice Test - 13.12.2019
Calcutta High Court has declined to stay an order by a Subordinate Calcutta Court that had allowed police to conduct a voice sample test of BJP leader Mukul Roy in connection with the arrest in July last year of a Burrabazar trader from whom Rs 90 lakh had been seized.

LTC Scam: Delhi High Court Quashes FIR, Proceedings Against Former RS MP Mahmood A Madani - 13.12.2019
Delhi High Court has quashed the First Investigation Report and consequent proceedings against former Rajya Sabha MP Mahmood A Madani in connection with the LTC scam in which names of some former lawmakers had cropped up. It however asked him to pay a cost of Rs 5 lakh for the "inadvertent" mistake and asked him to return the excess claim.

Supreme Court Says Sabarimala Tradition Age-Old, Refuses Women's Plea - 13.12.2019
Supreme Court has refused to pass an order on a plea by two women to allow them entry into the Sabarimala temple. The Court said, "We will endeavour to constitute a seven-judge bench at the earliest, and these matters would be taken up after the decision of this bench. "Every woman who wants to go, must go. But, the situation in the country becomes explosive, we don`t want any violence. There is a judgment, but it is not the last word on the issue".

Delhi High Court to Police: Provide Security to JNU Officials to Access Administrative Block - 12.12.2019
Delhi High Court has directed the police to provide security and assistance to JNU's administrative staff, including the Vice Chancellor and the Registrar, to enable them to enter the main office building, access to which has been allegedly blocked by protesting students.The Court issued the direction to Delhi Police after the Court was informed that the Registrar of the University has been unable to enter the administrative block which has been "on lock-down" due to the protest by the students.

SC Disapproves HC's Practice of Summoning Officers who Passed Order Impugned in Writ Petitions - 11.12.2019
Supreme Court has disapproved the practice of summoning officers by the High Court while considering the writ petitions which impugns the orders passed by the said officers. The Court noted that merely because an order has been passed by the officer it does not warrant the personal presence of the officer in the Court.

Supreme Court Permits Cutting of Over 400 Trees for Delhi-Agra Rail Line - 11.12.2019
Supreme Court has allowed the cutting of 452 trees for the construction of an additional track for the railway line connecting Delhi to Agra via Mathura, provided the mandatory compensatory afforestation is also undertaken. The Court also ordered Member Secretary of National Legal Service Authority of India to deploy an officer to inspect the site to prepare a periodical report, every three months until further orders, on the condition of saplings planted as part of afforestation.

Delhi High Court: Can Use General Urdu, Persian Words in FIRs, Avoid Archaic Usage - 11.12.2019
Delhi High Court has clarified that it had in an earlier order only directed that First Investigation Reports should be registered in simple language and archaic Urdu and Persian words need to be avoided. The Court said that Urdu and Persian words of general use can be used by police while registering complaints.
